The Transfer Request Conundrum

Mission: Episode 3 - Winds of Change
Timeline: Day 17 - 1130

Jacob was starting to get frustrated with Captain Rodriguez. Twice now he had stopped the transfer of Lieutenant Harrington, who Jacob wanted to as the Chief Conn officer on the new Unification. I am sure this was already sorted by the brass he thought to himself. To hell with this. He tapped his comm badge.

"Lambert to Bridge." he spoke aloud to his empty ready room. "Open a channel to Admiral Adislo's office, pipe it in here. Lambert out." The comm channels in his ready room were still not repaired so he had to contact the bridge every time he wanted to open a channel outside of the ship. It was annoying, but when it annoyed him too much he would just go to the office in his quarters, where external ship comms were actually working.

The blank screen was flashed on with the Starfleet Command logo. It was suddenly replaced with the face of a Vulcan Lieutenant Commander, whom the Captain had become more than acquainted by now. "Lieutenant Commander Tevak, a pleasure as always. Can you put me through please?"

The Vulcan raised an eyebrow. "Ironic. It is I who usually dispenses with the pleasantries. How Vulcan of you. Putting you through now." This Vulcan always managed to bring a smile to Jacob, he had a strange sense of humour, which for a Vulcan was just plain weird. The screen seemed to be blank for a longer time than usual before a smiling Bolian Admiral popped on the screen.

"Apologies Captain, I was on another transmission. What can I do for you today?"

"I have put in a transfer request twice now for Lieutenant Harrison and..." The Admiral raised his hand.'

"Say no more Captain. Give me a few moments, Adislo out." Jacob didn't quite know what had just happened. The comm channel closed. Clearly the Admiral knew something about Captain Rodriguez.

A few moments passed, before his comm badge chirped. "Bridge to Captain Lambert. We have an incoming transmission from a Captain Rodriguez and Admiral Adislo."

"Put it through please. Lambert out." The screen flashed showing on the left Captain Rodriguez and on the right Admiral Adislo. Lambert nodded to both. "Captain, Admiral."

The Admiral spoke first. "Tell me Captain Rodriguez, what's so special about Lieutenant Harrison?"

"Lieutenant Harrison? Are you referring to Lieutenant Harrington, sir?" Rodriguez spoke coyly. He was wanting to offload the Lieutenant at the first opportunity. He wanted him to transfer him out of the Telestro's new area of operations in the Gamma Quadrant. It seemed that he was now valuable to another starship commander and he didn't want that.

The Admiral blinked and reread the information on his PADD. "Yes. Him as well. Why have you held up a transfer for the Lieutenant twice now. Captain Lambert has put through 2 transfer requests already, one of which was denied, the other I can only assume forgotten about. Because I am pretty sure I put the second one through, and obviously the Admirals transfer request can not have been ignored now can it?"

"I simply cannot part with Mr. Harrington. He is an essential member of my crew. He's also a damn fine conn officer that I don't want to lose..." Rodriguez stumbled on his next train of thought. "We are going into an area of operations that I haven't had the slightest idea we are going into. I've never seen action on this side of the wormhole. I need people I know can do the job right the first time."

"You can have a replacement from one of the relief ships coming in from Deep Space 9 within the next two weeks. And no, before you open your mouth the Unification isn't waiting for the relief ships." The Admiral tapped a few commands on his console. "The request for a transfer has been approved Captain Lambert. Lieutenant Harrington will report for duty on the Unification within the next 24 hours."

Jacob didn't want to smile. But a very small smile crept across his face. "Thank you Admiral."

Rodriguez muttered under his breathe at his defeat, "I am going to put my protest formally to Starfleet Command on this, Admiral." Rodriguez eyes panned to screen containing Jacob spotting his smile than returned to look at the screen fully, "Know what. Have him. He's worth a lot less than the headache that he's worth."

"Your protest is noted Captain." He emphasised the officers rank. "Perhaps you should remember that you are talking to someone FROM Starfleet Command." The Admirals face no longer had any hint of a smile. He looked furious. Clearly Rodriguez had pushed his buttons.

Rodriguez simply nodded his head, "I will let the Lieutenant know that he has been reassigned to Unification."

"Thank you. Captains, I have more important things to do." Without saying another word he simply closed the channel leaving the com line open between the two Captains.

[ Captain's Ready Room; USS Telestro ]

Asshole, thought Rodriguez after the commlink from the Admiral's Office had been cut. He looked to the screen at Lambert, "Anything else?"

Jacob didn't quite know what he could say without pissing off this other Captain more. "No thank you Captain."

"Later," Rodriguez disconnected the commlink.
