Episode 3 - Winds of Change
Location: New Bajor
Timeline: Day 16 - 1030
Jacob sat in his quarters in the Starfleet compound, here on New Bajor. They were quite spacious, considering his rank. He had thought they were about the size of the Captains quarters on a Galaxy class ship. He spent his days going through reports, filling out requisitions, stuff like that. And with so many crew transferring from the Cassiopeia and with the Unifications crew now currently residing on New Bajor, there was indeed quite a lot to do.
His comm channel beeped, before the monitor which was in the desk rose to present him with the white Starfleet symbol. The screen flashed for a moment before a Vulcan man appeared.
"Greetings Commander Lambert. The Admiral requests your presence on Gamma Command at once. He is overseeing the final preparations for the USS Cassiopeia."
"As usually Commander Tevak, you are straight to the point." The Vulcan on the screen raised an eyebrow. "I will beam up within a few minutes."
"Excellent. I shall let him know. Tevak out." The screen went blank, and began to slip into the desk once more.
He stood, and straightened out his uniform. He picked up a PADD and downloaded everything he needed to do today onto it. He had no idea how long he would be up on Gamma Command, the Regulus class station in orbit around New Bajor, but he wasn't going to fall behind on his reports because of little trips like this. He couldn't decide if he wanted to transport up, or take a shuttle. Though he had told Commander Tevak that he would be beaming up, he still wanted to catch up with some more reports on the way. He turned and headed out of the door, with his PADD in hand.
After a short walk across the plaza by the Command offices, he found himself at the shuttle pads, where there were several shuttles, and 2 runabouts. He spotted the next shuttle for Gamma Command, the Cochrane, about to leave for orbit. He knew there was space on board, the type-11 class shuttle carried up to 10 passengers. They used shuttles regularly to ensure that they were always operational. Also provided a scenic route to get to outer New Bajor orbit. It would only take around 10 minutes, but he could get so much done in that 10 minutes. He entered the shuttle, nodded to the pilot and took his seat in the back of the vessel.
As the shuttle pulled into the docking bay of the station the computer system of the shuttle automatically let the station computer that he was on board, transferring his comm signal to the stations communications network. Almost the second that happened, his comm badge chirped.
"Captain th'Zarath to Commander Lambert. Captain Shres th'Zarath was the commanding officer of this orbital facility. Through both known as Deep Space 11, both the orbital facility and the planetary compound had their own commanding officers, who both fell under the purview of Admiral Adislo.
"This is Lambert. Go ahead Captain."
"I am sure you are aware that the Admiral is expecting you. He is awaiting your arrival in the CIC."
"Thank you Captain, Lambert out." He walked from the shuttle bay into one of the turbolifts, making his way to the CIC.
After a short ride, he stepped out into the CIC, turned to his right he headed for the Admirals office. Though the Admiral had an office on New Bajor, the computer cores were kept synced, so that he would always have the information both here and on the planet. Jacob pushed the control pad next to the door, and waited for the doors to open.
The Bolian admiral, though always smiling, always seemed quite intimidating. Maybe it was the face he was always smiling, even when he was disciplining some subordinate officer. "Ahh, Commander Lambert, come in, come in. Have a seat, at ease."
"Thank you Admiral. I must say I have no idea why I am here. Unless I am being reassigned?" Inside he was hoping for the XO position of the Cassiopeia. Though he had commanded a smaller ship before, he had only held the rank of Commander. And given that he managed to allow that ship to blow up, he held out his hopes of just holding onto his rank.
"You are Commander. You are being reassigned to the Cassiopeia." Its like he doesn't know how to not smile Jacob thought to himself. He was also relieved that he wasn't being demoted.
"That is welcome news Admiral. Who will be my CO?"
"I will. Well technically anyway." the Admiral replied.
"I, erm, I'm sorry Sir, I don't understand. You are taking command of the Cassiopeia?" A sense of anxiety suddenly hit Jacob.
"No. I am technically your commanding office now anyway. You are the CO of the Cassiopeia. Congratulations Captain." The still smiling Admiral replied.
"I thought I was getting the XO position. After what happened to the Unification, I didn't thing I would be getting a command again, or at the very least not for a while."
"Well we had 2 ships and two crews. One was missing a ship, one was missing a command crew." The Admiral paused a moment to think about the command crew that were all killed on the Cassiopeia. "It was the only logical choice."
"I don't know what to say Admiral. Thank you." He was, for once, lost for words.
"The pleasure is mine entirely. You will officially take command at Zero Seven Hundred hours tomorrow morning, GC time. Make sure any belongings you have at the compound are either stored away or in your quarters on the Cassiopeia. Your quarters on the ship will be about the same size as the ones on the planet too. Being a Captain has its perks. "
"Thank you Admiral." His face became blank, as he realised what the Admiral had just said. "Wait, Captain?"
"Oh, forgot to mention that. As commanding officer of this area of operation, I hereby promote you to the rank of Captain, with all the rights and privileges attached." The Admiral stood up, Jacob followed suit. "Report to the Cassiopeia immediately and begin inspections. Most of your command crew have already been informed and will be reporting for duty within the next 48 hours. Commander Germond is remaining on board, but with her injury, she didn't feel she would be a good XO to you, in her current condition. Her replacement is Lieutenant Colonel Elena Wright, who you have been working with the last week or so." He paused. "Any questions?"
"No Sir." The admiral looked about to say something. "Actually, yes Sir. The former Unification crew, my crew. Did they all choose to be assigned to the Cassiopeia?"
"Yes, every single one. You have a fine crew Captain. A loyal crew. Any other questions?" Jacob shook his head. "Very well. Your new pip is in your quarters on the Cassiopea. Dismissed Captain." Jacob stood and turned to the door. His smile certainly is infectious he thought to himself, his own smile beaming for all to see.
