Episode 1B - Welcome Aboard Reboot
Location: Mess Hall
Timeline: Day 2 - 0630
Abi woke up early, well, it would not be early anymore. Starships ran with much more precision than even a Starfleet hospital on Earth. This would be her waking time most days from here on out. She found her uniform in the closet. It might have easier had she turned on the lights, but she was not a big fan of bright lights in the morning. She went into the bathroom and pulled her hair back, did the smallest amount of make-up and was out the door.
As she approached the mess hall she was pretty sure she smelt bacon. That was an encouraging sign, even it it was replicated it still smelled good. The mess hall was pretty full, mostly enlisted folks.
She grabbed her breakfast. While the bacon did smell good, she decided on eggs benedict and orange juice.
She turned around and surveyed the room. Where to sit, she thought to herself. Ahh, there was an officer in the back, by the windows, by himself. He still had most of a breakfast in front of him. She approached the table.
"Excuse me, may I join you?" She asked, leaning a bit to side to look the man in the eye.
Roebuck was reading over a PADD, reviewing the Security Department's Personnel. He looked up at the sound of a voice he didn't recognize. "Uh, yes, please." He stood up and offered a smile.
"Thanks lieutenant." Abi sat, looked up at the man as he sat down, clearly security, and his rank matched the crew roster she had been given. "I am Abi Larson, the new CMO, I am going to guess you are the security chief?"
"Yes ma'am." Even though Roebuck did out rank the Ensign, she was the Chief Medical Officer...and he wanted to be respectful. "I'm Jonathan Roebuck, the ship's new Chief of Security and Tactical." He offered a smile.
"Where are you from Mr. Roebuck? I am going to assume the answer is Earth, but I have never seen whatever it is you are eating for breakfast."
He nodded, "I was born and raised in California, the Los Angeles area, on the Earth." Even though the Hermosa Earthquake caused the region around the city to sink under two hundred meters of water, creating one of the world's largest coral reefs, home to thousands of marine species in 2047, a large section of the city, commonly refereed to as Los Angeles Island, was a thriving city.
Roebuck looked down at bowl and smirked, "It's called Shrimp and Grits. A friend of mine at the Academy introduced me to it. It's a dish created and served around the Charleston, South Carolina area."
He took a sip of his coffee, "How about yourself? Where are you from?"
"I grew up in a small town in Northern Minnesota, near Lake Superior. Not much there really. My Dad's bar, a few whitewater rafting outfitters, camping, forests. It was a fantastic place to grow up though." Abi decided to fill in some more of the story. "We were about 20km outside of Duluth. I went to medical school there. My job at starfleet medical was really the first occasion I had to leave home." She ate some more of her breakfast.
"So, what do you do for fun on board? I'm open to ideas."
"Actually, I just came on board a few hours ago." Roebuck replied, "So far the only fun I've had was being questioned by a Vulcan when I came aboard, visited the Bridge, spoke to the Captain, and logged into Tactical to download the Security Personnel's information, then came here to grab a a bit to eat."
He looked around the small Officers' Mess, "Even though this is a small ship, there has to be something to do."
"I guess we are all new huh?" Abi realized the silliness of her question.
Jonathan smiled. It was nice to meet a new friend, but he was not ready to let his guard down. With everything he'd been though in the last few years...it was going to take some time...
"It does, but perhaps that'll be good for us all."
