Personality & Traits
General Overview | The one word that describes Gabriel Grey is EXPERIENCED. As a 78 year-old retired Rear Admiral, Gabriel Grey has seen it all. Once a bold and fiery commanding officer, Gabriel has grown more wizened and reticent over the years. Many view him as a type of father figure, as he is patient, attentive, and a great source of advice. Gabriel Grey is intelligent, principled and disciplined. As a living legend & celebrated Federation hero, he is very well-respected.
Strengths & Weaknesses | Gabriel Grey is a retired Starfleet admiral with over 60 years of diplomatic and command experience under his belt. He literally wrote the book on Advanced Starship Command Theory that cadets hoping to wear command-red all have study at the Academy. Gabriel's 10 year experience as an ambassador to both Cardassia and Romulus following the Dominon War and the Shinzon Incident, speak to his formidable skills as a diplomat and negotiator. As a 78 year-old man, Gabriel Grey's only weaknesses are the loss of vigor and vitality that inevitably comes with age. Gabriel has lost some of the "pep in his step", and laments the sad fact that his body has trouble keeping up with what his heart and mind want to do. Gabriel Grey is a man who now knows the truth in the old saying, "Youth is wasted on the young". |

Ambitions | Gabriel Grey is a man who has accomplished a lot in his life, but who is not willing to accept that there are no more challenges left for him to rise to. Gabriel joins the USS Unification, hoping to find the next great adventure in his life. Although technically a civilian now, the retired admiral hopes to bring his veteran leadership and experience to help the USS Unification. He hopes to serve as a valuable resource and advisor to the Commanding Officer of the Unification.
Hobbies & Interests | As a retiree, Gabriel Grey has been able to indulge in a few hobbies and interests. One hobby of his is xenolinguistics, the study of alien languages. Gabriel is fluent in over 9 languages, including Vulcan, Romulan, Cardassian & Dominionese. Another interest of the retired admiral's is mythology. He is an avid reader and collector of mythological accounts and folkloric tales from cultures throughout the galaxy, considering himself something of a dilettante in the subject. Gabriel Grey firmly believes that learning about a culture's mythology is as important as learning their history and philosophies, and can grant unique insight into their perspectives and values. Lastly, Gabriel Grey is very much interested in philanthropy and humanitarian aid. He has founded a private, non-profit organization that responds to crises all across the Federation and her neighbors — from natural disasters & famine, to war refugees & sentient rights violations. |
Personal History | Gabriel Grey was born on the 30th of May, 2309 (Stardate 13589.7) in the city of Boston on the planet Earth. His father, a 1st Lieutenant George Grey, was killed in the Tomed Incident: a Romulan terrorist attack that took place in 2311, when Gabriel was only two years old. Gabriel grew up idolizing the father that he never got the chance to know, and on his seventeenth birthday, Gabriel Grey enlisted for service in the Starfleet Marine Corps. Gabriel proved to be a natural leader with a strong belief in discipline, and so he naturally succeeded in his career path as a drill instructor. Gabriel Grey was posted at Fort Cochrane, on Algeron IV, the site of the signing of the famous Treaty of Algeron, near the Romulan Neutral Zone. As a young man, Gabriel believed that one day there might be a war with the Romulans — he had never forgotten that it was a Romulan terrorist attack that had stolen his father away from him. His beliefs in a coming war caused him to push the MACO trainees under his instruction to the limit. His tenure as the head drill instructor at Fort Cochrane turned out crop after crop of some of the finest marines Starfleet had ever seen. It was Gabriel's reputation as a consummate soldier that lead to him being hand picked by Ambassador T'Lar, a female Vulcan civilian, to help her establish a Federation embassy in Klingon territory — the first in Federation history. Gabriel was sent to Camp Khitomer and appointed to serve as the head of the embassy's security department. Gabriel also doubled as the personal bodyguard to the beautiful ambassador T'Lar, an older woman 200 years his senior. Gabriel distinguished himself by thwarting an assassination attempt against both Ambassador T'Lar, and a Klingon High Council member named Klaar, son of QoreH. The incident — known to history as the B'Rel Incident — lead to Gabriel being awarded the Star of the Empire by the Klingon government and lauded as a hero by the Federation. At Ambassador T'Lar's behest, Gabriel applied to Starfleet Academy and was accepted. Gabriel went into the Academy a lowly gruff non-com, and emerged a polished officer, with a brilliant career ahead of him. But Gabriel found the sudden good fortune bittersweet. His new career as a Starfleet officer had torn him away from the only woman he'd ever loved. Gabriel cut his teeth as an officer aboard the USS Invincible, rising quickly through the ranks from Ensign to Lieutenant. However, it was in his service during the Federation-Cardassian War, aboard the USS Dauntless, that won Gabriel Grey fame & glory. His service, sacrifice & valor in over 100 separate engagements over the course of the war had resulted in Gabriel being awarded the Archer medal, the Kirk Medal, and the Pike medal — a feat known in Starfleet lore as 'The Trifecta'. Only three other people in the history of Starfleet have ever been awarded all three medals. Gabriel Grey was the first to do so. Having survived the Cardassian War a living legend, Gabriel was promptly offered a Captaincy and command of his own vessel, the USS Relentless. As Captain of the Relentless, Gabriel continued his distinguished career, leading the way into war again during the Federation-Tholian Conflict. Gabriel's exemplary service during the war, and his instrumental role in negotiating the peace treaty that finally ended hostilities with the Tholians, earned Gabriel a second Archer Medal of Service, as well as an honorary doctorate degree from the Ambassadorial Institute at the University of Betazed. His star continued to rise, and he was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral, and was petitioned to serve aboard the USS Nobel, as her Liaison Officer and Ambassador. Gabriel helped bring over 32 separate civilizations into membership with the United Federation of Planets; a period of rapid expansion that brought peace and prosperity to the length and breadth of the Federation. Unfortunately, tragedy stuck for Gabriel, when he learned of the sad news that his aged mother had died back on Earth. Mere days after returning to Earth for his mother's funeral, Gabriel learned that Ambassador T'Lar, the one true love of his life, had also passed away on Vulcan. The two deaths following so closely to one another took a heavy emotional toll on Gabriel, and he took a few months leave to mourn the loss of his mother and mentor, transferring to Starfleet Headquarters back on Earth. However, it wasn't long before Gabriel was called on again to lend his guidance, expertise and status as a legend to help Starfleet. He was petitioned to endorse a radical new recruit training program, which later became known as 'Red Squad'. Following the Battle of Wolf 359 against the Borg, Gabriel's experience and influence was sought again to help develop Starfleet's first warship, a vessel whose only purpose would be military action, resulting in the Defiant Development Project. During the height of the Dominion War, Starfleet once again called on Gabriel's diplomatic skills, dispatching him to Romulus, to attempt to forge an alliance between the Romulan Star Empire and the Federation. Much of what he accomplished on Romulus during the Dominion War has been classified by Starfleet Intelligence and the records redacted, but Gabriel's service as a diplomat during the war netted him a second Kirk Medal of Sacrifice. After the war, Gabriel was dispatched as an Ambassador to Cardassia Prime, where he attempted to assist the Cardassian Union in rebuilding after the devastation wrought by the Dominion. Seeing the plight of the war-torn Cardassians first-hand, and dissatisfied with how little was actually being done to heal the suffering of the Cardassian people, Gabriel helped found a non-profit organization tasked with providing humanitarian aid and war relief to the people of Cardassia. Gabriel's efforts won him the Federation Peace Prize in 2381. Satisfied with being able to effect true and lasting change through his philanthropic organization, Gabriel Grey officially retired from service in Starfleet at the age of seventy-two. Gabriel returned to Earth, and his hometown of Boston, where he busied himself with his personal collection of mythologies, and the publication of his memoirs, which became a best-seller. However, soon the old familiar itch returned. Gabriel wasn't ready to call it quits just yet. He found that he still craved the life of a Starfleet officer. He may have been born on Earth, but he had spent a lifetime amongst the stars. And who could say? There might even still be one more mile on his journey — one more great adventure — out there waiting for him. |
